What Else Affects the Sizing
1. Which Floor the Room Is On
Upstairs rooms run hotter because of roof heat. Add 10% BTU.
2. Sun Exposure
West-facing rooms take the hottest afternoon sun. Add 10-15% BTU.
3. How Many People Use It
Each additional person adds roughly 600 BTU of body heat. For a master bedroom shared by two, consider 1.5HP even at 120 sqft.
4. Electrical Equipment
Computers, televisions and an open kitchen all add heat load. Size up.
5. Ceiling Height
A high ceiling (12 feet or more) needs 15-20% more BTU.
Common Mistakes
- "Buy big so it's cold" — wrong. Overcooling causes damp and wastes energy
- "1.0HP is enough for the hall" — a typical hall needs at least 2.0HP
- "All brands are the same" — a Toshiba inverter can hold a low speed, which is where the savings come from
